phpNuke, das populärste Newssystem für Webseiten liegt in einer neuen Version vor. Der argentinische Entwickler Frencesco Burzi hat jetzt die neue Version 6.5 der OpenSource-Software freigegeben. Im Moment ist das Programm allerdings nur dem zahlenden Kreis des phpNuke-Clubs zugänglich. In etwa vierzehn Tagen soll es aber kostenlos für die Allgemeinheit zum Download bereitstehen. Die größte Neuerung ist die Integration der Forensoftware phpBB 2.

Schaut man sich die Liste der Änderungen durch, dann ist man schnell enttäuscht. Tatsächlich ist die einzige wirklich entscheidende Neuerung die Integration einer zeitgemäßen Boardsoftware. Auf Wunsch der überwiegenden Mehrheit aller Anwender wurde mit phpBB 2 die beste im Moment erhältliche OpenSource-Software an die Zusammenarbeit mit phpNuke angepasst. Alle anderen Änderungen sind lediglich kosmetischer Natur oder beheben bekannte Sicherheitslücken.

So wundert es auch nicht, dass es eine Menge enttäuschter Kommentare zu der neuen Programmversion gab. Viele Anregungen der großen Nutzergemeinde wurden nicht berücksichtigt, viele bestehende Module wurden nicht integriert. Noch immer kann man den Nachrichten keine Bilder, Grafiken oder Fotos beifügen, ohne selbst Hand an den html-Code zu legen. Noch immer können Autoren keine Bilder selbst hinzufügen, wenn  sie keinen ftp-Zugang zum Webserver haben. Noch immer kann man keine Nachrichten über mehrere Seiten schreiben. Die Liste der unvollständigen oder uneinheitlichen Funktionen ist durch die neue Version auf jeden Fall nicht kleiner geworden.

Es rächt sich dabei, dass phpNuke noch immer die Ein-Mann-Show von Francesco Burzi (FB) geblieben ist, der offensichtlich keine Partner an seiner Seite duldet. Er macht weiterhin alles allein und ist zudem ständig mit der Geldbeschaffung für sich und seine Familie ausgelastet. So fehlt es an einer dynamischen Weiterentwicklung der OpenSource-Software durch möglichst viele Programmierer. Dabei zeigt die aktuelle Version, wie solch eine Zusammenarbeit aussehen könnte. Die Integration von phpBB wurde nämlich nicht von FB vorgenommen, sondern ist eine Entwicklung des Australiers Tom Nietscher.

Doch auf Grund der großen Verbreitung von phpNuke werden die Anwender auch weiterhin der Software treu bleiben. In der Vergangenheit gab es viele Projekte von unabhängigen Entwicklergruppen, die die Software auf eigene Faust weiterentwickeln wollten. Doch meist schliefen diese Projekte schnell wieder ein oder wurden ganz kommerziell. Deshalb bleiben die Anwender wohl phpNuke treu, auch wenn sie viel Kritik an der unvollständigen und teilweise miserabel programmierten Software haben. Die einzige ernst zu nehmende Konkurrenz wäre ein eigenständiges Portal zu phpBB. Doch dessen Entwicklerteam hat noch nicht einmal mit seiner Arbeit begonnen.
